Chhattisgarh’s first airport in northern tribal belt inaugurated

A domestic airport was inaugurated in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja region, bringing the northern tribal belt directly on the air connectivity map.

Earlier, residents of the six districts in the Sarguja region had to travel five to seven hours to reach airports in Bilaspur or Raipur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Maa Mahamaya Airport in Ambikapur, Surguja district on Sunday. Built over 365 acres at a cost of Rs 80 crore, the airport features an airstrip capable of handling 72-seater aircraft and has a capacity to handle five lakh passengers annually.

The airport now offers over 10 lakh people in the region quicker and more cost-effective access to major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Jabalpur, Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Bilaspur.
