PTI, UNDP

A total of 234 million people live below the poverty line in India, making it the highest in the world according to a report released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).

It said that 1.1 billion people live in acute poverty worldwide, with 40% living in countries experiencing war, fragility and/or low peacefulness, according to at least one of the three widely used datasets of conflict settings. India is among five countries which account for nearly half, or 48.1% of the 1.1 billion living in poverty. The other four countries are Pakistan (93 million), Ethiopia (86 million), Nigeria (74 million) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (66 million).

Multidimensional poverty was measured by constructing a deprivation profile for each household and person in it covering 10 indicators of health, education and standard of living.
