Byju’s: Rajnish Kumar, Mohandas Pai to step down from advisory panel

Former SBI chairman Rajnish Kumar and ex-Infosys chief financial officer Mohandas Pai have decided to discontinue as members of Think & Learn advisory council after a discussion with the founders, the edtech firm said on Sunday.

Raveendran Byju, the founder of Think & Learn which owns the Byju’s brand, blamed a few foreign investors for delaying the company’s revival, which included restructuring of the board, delay in financial results and resolving liquidity crisis by opposing the $200 million rights issue. Think & Learn had formed the advisory council in July 2023 to mentor and advise the edtech firm to come out of the crisis and improve governance.

“Our engagement with the company as advisors was always on a fixed-term basis for a year. Based on our discussions with the founders, it was mutually decided that the tenure of the advisory council should not be extended.” “Though a formal engagement concludes, the founders and the company can always approach us for any advice. We wish the founders and the company the very best for the future,” Kumar and Pai said in a joint statement.

Byju's said that it values the engagement with the advisors and greatly appreciates all their efforts in navigating the company through turbulent times.

Teen involved in accident gets quick bail with order to write essay

A day after the Juvenile Justice Board in Pune granted bail to a teenager involved in a car accident that killed two people while asking him to write a '300-word essay', police on Monday said they will seek a higher court's permission to try him as an adult.

Police has also registered a case against his father, a real estate developer, a senior official said. The Porsche allegedly driven by the 17-year-old, who the police claim was drunk, knocked down two persons on a motorbike in Kalyani Nagar area in Pune around 3.15 am on Sunday, causing their death.

The youngster was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board which granted him bail hours later.

It also directed him to visit the Regional Transport Office and study traffic rules, and submit a presentation to the Board within 15 days.  “The CCL (Child in Conflict with Law) will write an essay of 300 words on the topic of road accidents and their solutions,” the order read.

The board also directed the youth to be referred to an alcohol deaddiction centre for counselling.

The quick bail in a case, however, has drawn criticism. According to police, a case has been registered against the youngster under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

A group of friends were returning on motorbikes around 3.15 am on Sunday after a party when a speeding Porsche hit one of the motorcycles at Kalyani Nagar junction.

The two riders - Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa, both 24-year-old IT professionals and hailing from Madhya Pradesh - died of their injuries. Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said his blood report was yet to be received but preliminary probe showed that the juvenile was drunk at the time of the accident, he said.

“The CCTV footage of the bar clearly shows that the juvenile was consuming alcohol. There is no doubt that the juvenile was driving the car after consuming alcohol. We will be submitting all these facts to the court,” commissioner Kumar said.

“We have also registered an offence against his father under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act, and against the proprietors of the bar establishment for serving alcohol to an underage person. We have transferred the probe of these cases to the crime branch,” he further said.

Pune luxury car accident: Minor driver told to write essay on mishap by court

Cases will be registered against the father of a teen, who was driving a luxury car when it got involved in a fatal accident in Pune, and the bar that "served the boy liquor", an official said on Sunday.

Two persons were killed when the speeding luxury car hit their motorcycle in the city on Sunday, police said.

The 17-year-old car driver was detained after a case was registered against him. He was produced in a juvenile court where the Police sought his custody and permission to try the accused as an adult, but the court refused and granted bail. Defence lawyer advocate Prashan Patil said the court granted bail to his client (the minor boy) under certain conditions. When asked about the bail conditions, Patil said the court told the accused to “work with traffic police of Yerwada for 15 days” and “write an essay on the accident”.

As per section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, a person with actual control or charge of a child can be punished if he assaults, abandons or neglects the child wilfully, and abuses him, causing mental or physical illness. Section 77 pertains to giving liquor or drugs to a child. The accident took place around 3.15 am in Kalyani Nagar when a group of friends after a party at a restaurant in the area were returning home on their motorbikes.

Near the Kalyani Nagar junction, a speeding luxury car hit one of the motorcycles following which its two riders fell from the vehicle and died on the spot, as per the FIR. After knocking down the duo, the car crashed into the roadside pavement railings.

A video surfaced on social media wherein a group of people was seen thrashing the driver as he tried to come out of the crashed car.

47.5% voting in Mumbai till 5 pm as voters complain of long wait for casting ballot

A voting turnout of 47.52% was recorded till 5 pm across the six Lok Sabha constituencies in Mumbai on Monday amid complaints of slow polling process, non-functional EVMs and names missing from voter rolls.

The city has a total of 9,93,8621 registered voters while 116 candidates were in the fray in the six constituencies. The Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) at the polling booth in Hiranandani Complex area in Powai in North Central Mumbai constituency stopped functioning at 11.30 am, with actor-producer and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aadesh Bandekar claiming that voters had to wait in line for two hours till the machine was replaced.

Besides Bandekar, actor Mukesh Rishi and filmmaker Kedar Shinde were among those who were in the queue at the booth. In Borivali, voters complained of names missing from the electoral list.

Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad, who is contesting from Mumbai North Central, said she was getting worrying reports from across Mumbai about people waiting for several hours in queues amid heat, and returning without casting their vote.

Many people said they had never waited this long to vote before and the complaints came especially from the areas where the Opposition's MVA coalition has a strong presence, she claimed. "I request the @ECISVEEP and @CEO_Maharashtra to immediately address these complaints and also take immediate measures to improve the pace of voting," she said on X while also demanding that the time for voting be increased by an hour.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray addressed a press conference and accused the ECI of delaying the poll process deliberately at the behest of the Narendra Modi government.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, however, said he first complained to the EC about the slow pace of voting in the city, and Thackeray was blaming the Modi government only because the opposition was staring at a defeat. Thackeray was preparing the ground to face the results on June 4, Fadnavis added.

Biggest allegation I have faced is owning 250 pairs of clothes: PM Modi

Often the Opposition target for his sartorial choices, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the biggest allegation he faced in his political career was that he owned 250 pairs of clothes.

In an interview to PTI, Modi said the allegation was levelled by Congress leader and former Gujarat Chief Minister Amarsinh Chaudhary and tha was countered by him at a public meeting. "I asked the people whether they wanted a Chief Minister who stole Rs 250 crore or one who had 250 pairs of clothes. The people of Gujarat responded in one voice that a Chief Minister with 250 pairs of clothes will be fine," Modi said.

Recollecting the incident during his tenure as Gujarat chief minister, Modi said he accepted Chaudhary's accusations at a public meeting but asserted that the former Chief Minister had got his numbers wrong. "That day I had a public meeting, where I said that I accept this accusation, but either the zero (in 250) is wrong, or the number two is wrong. Still I accept the accusation," Modi said.

Recently, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at Modi's sartorial choices claiming that he has been wearing expensive clothes while earning a salary of Rs 1.6 lakh per month.

Lok Sabha elections: Over 57% voter turnout recorded in fifth phase

Long Read

Over 57% voter turnout was recorded on Monday in 49 constituencies in six states and two Union territories in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha election.

With this polling for 23 states and Union territories and 379 seats has been completed so far.

While Maharashtra recorded the lowest voter turnout at 48.88%, West Bengal recorded the highest polling percentage at 73. Among other states, Bihar recorded 52.55% turnout, Jammu and Kashmir 54.21%, Jharkhand 63%, Odisha 60.72%, Uttar Pradesh 57.43% and Ladakh 67.15%.

According to the figures made available by the Election Commission till 7 pm, the approximate polling percentage was at 57.38.

Although voting time was till 6 pm, people already in the queue by that time are allowed to vote. Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency recorded a voter turnout of over 54%, already registering its highest polling percentage in almost four decades.

The overall polling percentage of 54.21 this time is second only to the 58.84% turnout the constituency saw in 1984.

Scattered incidents of violence marred the polls in seven parliamentary constituencies of West Bengal where TMC and BJP workers clashed in various parts of Barrackpore, Bongaon, and Arambagh seats. The poll panel said it has received 1,036 complaints from political parties alleging EVM malfunctioning and agents being stopped from entering booths.

Clashes broke out between supporters of the TMC and BJP in the Khanakul area of the Arambagh constituency.

In neighbouring Hooghly constituency, BJP sitting MP and party candidate Locket Chatterjee faced protests from TMC activists led by TMC MLA Ashima Patra. Violence was also reported from various parts of the Howrah constituency.

In Bongaon constituency’s Gayeshpur area, local BJP leader Subir Biswas was allegedly beaten by TMC supporters outside a booth. He was later shifted to the hospital.

In the Kalyani area of the same constituency, Union Minister and BJP candidate Shantanu Thakur caught a person using the identity card of his rival TMC candidate Biswajit Das inside a polling booth. The person was later removed from the booth by central forces. TMC workers also staged protests in some areas following allegations that Central forces were assisting BJP workers for allegedly intimidating voters at some booths of Hooghly.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Congress claimed EVM malfunctioning and accused the BJP of not allowing people to cast votes in three booths in Bela Khara village in Rahi block.

In a post on X, the Uttar Pradesh unit of the Congress, said, "Booth number 5, Rasulpur in Sareni in Rae Bareli is closed since 8 am (and) voters are going back. So this is how (the target of) 400 (seats) will be crossed!" Samajwadi Party candidate from Gonda constituency Shreya Verma complained to the Election Commission that fair polling is not taking place at booth numbers 180 and 181 in the Mankapur area.

According to reports from Kaushambi, voters of Hisampur Madho village boycotted the polls.

The villagers told the officials that they would consider voting only after the administration assured them that a road and railway bridge connecting the village to other areas would be built. In Maharashtra, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray claimed there were a lot of complaints from electors about facilities outside polling booths.

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya alleged that Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Sanjay Raut and Sunil Raut were found involved in "corrupt practices" outside their polling booth at Bhandup in Mumbai.

The former MP also claimed that two activists of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) were arrested for "illegal and corrupt practices of using a fake EVM". However, MLA Sunil Raut, who is the brother of Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut, dismissed the allegations saying a dummy electronic voting machine (EVM) was kept outside the 100-metre radius of the polling booth for educational purposes.

Still, the police removed it under "political pressure", he claimed. In Odisha, some unidentified persons allegedly hacked an auto-rickshaw driver to death near Sarsara in Bargarh district. The deceased was carrying some voters to the polling booth. While the family members claimed it was a political murder, police say personal enmity is the reason behind the crime.

EVM glitches were also reported at some places in Odisha

Voting process delayed deliberately in Mumbai at Central government’s behest, alleges Uddhav

Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray alleged on Monday afternoon that voting was delayed at several places in Mumbai.

Delay was taking place at the polling booths in areas where his party expects more votes, he said at a press conference while urging electors to stand in queues as long as early morning if the process was slow. As per poll officials, a voter turnout of 48.66% was recorded till 5 pm in 13 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra where the fifth and final phase of general elections was taking place.

In Mumbai, polling is taking place across all six Lok Sabha constituencies.

“Dirty games are being played through the Election Commission. There is a lot of enthusiasm among voters, but the Election Commission is acting in a partisan manner. There is a delay by EC's representatives in certain areas,” Thackeray alleged. Officials were cross-checking names several times, and women and senior citizens were facing problems at polling booths, the former Maharashtra chief minister said.

There was no drinking water at many places, he claimed.

“The Modi government is using the EC as its handmaiden due to its fear of losing. This is a ploy of the Modi government to ensure that voting against it is minimized,” Thackeray alleged. There was no incident of crowding outside polling stations in Mumbai city district due to slow voting process, said Mumbai city collector Sanjay Yadav.

In the morning, voters in large numbers assembled outside booths in Sewri, Sion Koliwada and one more place, but additional manpower was used to clear the rush and the polling process was conducted swiftly, the senior bureaucrat said.

“We were monitoring the situation at polling stations with the help of over 2,500 web cameras, and arrangements were being made accordingly,” he said. Voters who are at polling centres before or at 6 pm, will be allowed to cast their ballot, he said.

Mumbai Suburban District Collector Rajendra Kshirsagar said though there were long queues of electors at some booths, everyone who arrived before the closing of polling time will be allowed to cast their vote.

Name not on list, Mamata Banerjee’s brother fails to cast vote

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee's youngest brother Babun Banerjee on Monday could not cast his vote after his name was not found in the voters’ list, an election official said.

Babun, who is a voter of Howrah town, went to cast vote at a polling booth when it was discovered that his name was not on the list.

“The Election Commission of India is looking into the whole matter. Only it can explain why this happened,” Trinamool Congress spokesperson Shantanu Sen said. When contacted by PTI, Babun declined to take questions on the matter.

Babun had expressed his displeasure after TMC renominated sitting MP Prasun Banerjee for the Howrah Lok Sabha seat in March. Mamata Banerjee had then said she decided to disown him and cut off relationship with him.

There was a buzz earlier that Babun would contest as an independent candidate from that constituency after the TMC did not nominate him from there. He had claimed that the party promised him a ticket. There was a rumour that Babun was contemplating joining the BJP.

Babun is the president of the Bengal Olympic Association and Bengal Hockey Association, besides the secretary of the Bengal Boxing Association, and also in charge of the sports wing of the TMC.

'Not against any institution': Mamata praises RKM, Bharat Sevashram amid row

Praising the Ramakrishna Mission or Bharat Sevashram Sangha for their philanthropic works, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday said she was not against any institution but criticised one or two persons for indulging in politics.

Banerjee had on Saturday alleged that some monks of the two monastic orders were working "under instructions of the BJP". The statement drew sharp criticism from PM Narendra Modi who alleged that she was "under pressure from Muslim extremists" and was threatening these socio-religious organisations to "appease" the TMC's vote bank. Addressing an election rally in Bankura's Onda, Banerjee said, "I am not against Ramakrishna Mission, why should I be against an institution or insult it."

"I have spoken about one or two persons," she added.

The chief minister also praised Bharat Sevashram Sangha, saying that it works for the people. "I had spoken about Kartik Maharaj, he did not allow Trinamool Congress agent to sit (at a polling booth) in Rejinagar," Banerjee said.

Claiming that the Bharat Sevashram Sangha monk from Murshidabad district was working for the BJP, she accused him of instigating people when clashes between two groups happened at Rejinagar.

"If he wants to do BJP, he can, but should do it wearing its badge," she said.

Never spoken against minorities, but will not accept any ‘special citizens’: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he has never uttered a word against minorities, and the BJP has “not just today but never” acted against them. He, however, made it clear that he is not ready to accept anyone as "special citizens".

The comments in an interview to PTI Videos late Sunday is Modi’s most unequivocal on minorities amid an outcry from the opposition that his election speeches are communally divisive and polarising. He also said the Congress has constantly violated the secular spirit of the Constitution, and that his campaign speeches are aimed at exposing the opposition parties’ bid to appease minorities with vote bank politics.

In the interview, he was asked what he has to say about the apprehension among minorities because of his statements. “I have not spoken a word against minorities. I am only talking against the vote bank politics of Congress. Congress is working against the Constitution, that’s what I have been saying," he replied. Modi said the makers of India’s Constitution, including B R Ambedkar and Jawaharlal Nehru, had decided there will be no reservations on the basis of religion. "Now you are turning away from that. It is my responsibility to expose them. At that time there were no members of my party in the Constituent Assembly. It was an assembly of eminent people from across the country."

He was again asked if he has never meant to target the minorities in his election speeches, to which he said, “BJP has never been against minorities. Not just today but never.” He then added that the Congress follows the path of appeasement. “I follow the path of satisfaction. (Woh log tushtikaran ke raastey pe chaltey hain, main santushtikaran ke raastey pe chalta hoon). Their politics is that of appeasement. My politics is that of ‘sabka saath sabka vikas’. We believe in ‘sarva dharma sambhav’. We want to take everyone along with us. We are not ready to accept anyone as special citizens but consider everyone equal,” the prime minister said.

Will ensure full statehood for Delhi when I.N.D.I.A bloc forms government: Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday claimed the BJP is rattled by the fact that the I.N.D.I.A bloc would form government at the Centre after the ongoing Lok Sabha polls and the AAP, a constituent of the alliance, would ensure full statehood for the national capital.

Addressing poll meetings in South Delhi parliamentary constituency, Kejriwal alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is sending opposition leaders to jail and asked the crowd, "Have we chosen a PM or thanedaar?" Seeking support for AAP candidate Sahi Ram Pahalwan, the AAP chief addressed six poll meetings in Badarpur Sabzi Mandi, Tughlakabad, Kalkaji, Sangam Vihar, Ambedkar Nagar, and  Chhatarpur.

Addressing the crowd from atop a car, he pointed towards the prime minister's alleged opposition to free bus travel for women in Delhi in a TV interview, stating that amidst rising inflation, the PM should extend this benefit nationwide. The AAP supremo affirmed that on June 4, the I.N.D.I.A bloc government will be formed, and the AAP will also be a part of the government. "On behalf of the people of Delhi, I will make only one demand that Delhi should get the status of a full state.”

Congress didn't revoke Article 370 for appeasement politics: Amit Shah in Haryana

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday attacked the Congress, saying the party did not revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir for appeasement politics.

Addressing an election rally in Karnal, Shah reiterated that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) belongs to India and "we will take it back". The senior BJP leader also attacked the grand old party on the Ram temple issue, saying top Congress leaders such as Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi did not take part in the temple's consecration ceremony to please its minority vote bank.

Targeting Congress on Kashmir, he said "For appeasement politics, they did not revoke Article 370."

The Congress did not revoke the article despite a rise in terrorism in the area, he said. "You all made Narendra Modi ji the Prime Minister for the second time, and on August 5, 2019, he scrapped the Article 370. And now our tricolour proudly flutters in Kashmir," he said.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who is contesting the Karnal assembly bypoll and former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who is in fray for the Karnal Lok Sabha seat, were also present.

Scattered incidents of violence in fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls in Bengal

Scattered incidents of violence marred the fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls in seven parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal on Monday, as TMC and BJP workers clashed in various parts of Barrackpore, Bongaon, and Arambagh seats.

Although the poll panel has claimed that the polling has been peaceful so far, it said it has received 1,036 complaints until 11 am from political parties alleging EVM malfunctioning and agents being stopped from entering booths. Clashes broke out between supporters of TMC and BJP in Khanakul area of Arambagh constituency as both parties clashed over stopping polling agents from entering the booths.

Two live crude bombs were also recovered from the area by security personnel.

“BJP goons have unleashed a reign of terror in the area and are intimidating voters,” TMC candidate Mitali Bag said. BJP candidate Arup Kanti Digar rubbished the allegations and blamed the TMC for letting loose violence on the day of the polls.

In neighbouring Hooghly constituency, BJP sitting MP and party candidate Locket Chatterjee faced protests from TMC activists led by TMC MLA Ashima Patra.

As Chatterjee was on her way to a booth, TMC activists staged protests and shouted “Chor Chor (thief thief) slogans”. Following which, the BJP MP got down from her car and shouted counter slogans.

A huge police and central forces contingent rushed to the spot and stopped the two groups.

Sporadic incidents of violence were reported from various parts of Howrah constituency. In the Liluah area of Howrah, the BJP accused TMC workers of booth jamming leading to clashes between both groups.

The central police forces rushed to the area and dispersed the mob.

In Bongaon constituency’s Gayeshpur area, local BJP leader Subir Biswas was allegedly beaten by TMC goons outside a booth. He was later shifted to hospital. In the Kalyani area of the same constituency, Union Minister and BJP candidate Shantanu Thakur caught a person using the identity card of his rival TMC candidate Biswajit Das inside a polling booth.

The person was later removed from the booth by central forces.

In some areas, TMC workers staged protests following allegations that central forces were assisting BJP workers in intimidating voters at some booths of Hooghly.

BJP to score big in South, NDA will cross 400, says Modi in unwavering confidence for Lok Sabha results

BhubanesPrime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted that the BJP will emerge as the single largest party in the south, as he remained unwaveringly confident that his NDA alliance will cross 400 seats in Lok Sabha when election results come out on June 4.

“Our strategy for the entire nation is the same. Phir ek baar modi sarkar. Aur chaar June 400 paar,” Modi said in an interview to PTI Videos on Sunday night. Modi said his opponents have created a myth that the BJP has no strength or presence in the southern states.

“Look at 2019 elections. The largest party even then in the south was BJP. Again, I say this: the largest party in the south this time will be BJP, and its allies will add more (seats) to it,” he said.

In a separate written reply to questions submitted by PTI, Modi said “we will be the single largest party in Southern India and by an even bigger margin than the last time.” “We have seen a jump in mind-share already. We will see a big jump in seat share and vote share for us across the region,” he wrote.

Southern India accounts for 131 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats. In the outgoing House, BJP has 29 members besides one independent backed by it, from Karnataka.

Even in eastern India, “we are witnessing a massive surge of support from the people … which is giving sleepless nights to people in sections of the media and politics in Bhubaneswar, Kolkata and even in Delhi,” he wrote. “The blessings of the people will take us to a record-breaking mandate. We will see more seats from all parts of the country, particularly from the south and the east," he said in the written reply.

“NDA is on course to achieve the 400 seats,” he wrote.

“All assessments of the past phases of the elections show that the NDA is in pole position and the Congress along with its I.N.D.I alliance is struggling to even open its account in some states.” In the video interview, Modi said the BJP has been a truly national party “from Day 1, not only in our geographical presence but also in our ideology.”

“For us, nation first is the foundation of our ideology. If we take decisions for Bengal or Kerala it will be on the basis of nation first,” he said.

South Africa’s apex court ends Jacob Zuma’s bid to be elected again

South Africa’s highest court on Monday ended a bid by former president Jacob Zuma to stand as a candidate for Parliament in a national election on May 29 citing his previous criminal conviction.

The country’s apex judicial institution, the Constitutional Court (ConCourt), upheld the initial decision by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to disqualify 82-year-old Zuma's candidacy on the grounds of his 15-month prison sentence for contempt of court in 2021. Zuma had been nominated as the leader of the recently-established Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) Party, named after the erstwhile armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC) during the freedom struggle that ended in 1994 with Nelson Mandela becoming the country’s first democratically-elected President.

When MK named him as its candidate whose photo should appear on the ballot paper, the IEC declared that Zuma could not run because of the constitutional provision that prohibited anyone sentenced to more than 12 months in prison from being a member of parliament.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange wins bid to challenge extradition to US

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on Monday won a major reprieve as a London court permitted him to appeal against his extradition to the US on espionage charges.

Had the court ruled in the US's favour, Assange would have exhausted all legal avenues in the UK.

He has resisted extradition from the UK for over a decade after his Wikileaks website published thousands of confidential US documents in 2010 and 2011. The US Department of Justice described the leaks as “one of the largest compromises of classified information in the history of the United States”.

The files suggested the US military had killed civilians in unreported incidents during the war in Afghanistan.

According to US authorities, Assange endangered lives by failing to redact the names of Intelligence operatives in the documents. However, his lawyers have argued that the case is a politically motivated form of "state retaliation". The 52-year-old Australian national has been held at Belmarsh high-security prison in London since 2019 when he was taken into custody from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London where he had sought asylum.

On Monday, two High Court judges at the Royal Courts of Justice granted the Australian-born Assange permission to appeal against his extradition order. They agreed with his legal team on the issue of assurances from the US administration that Assange would be protected by and allowed to rely on the First Amendment of the country’s Constitution, which protects freedom of speech in the US, and the death penalty would not be imposed.

“Based on the principle of the separation of powers, the US court can and will apply US law, whatever the executive may say or do,” barrister Edward Fitzgerald told the court on behalf of Assange. The High Court ruling in favour of Assange means he will be able to challenge US assurances at a full hearing over how his prospective trial in America would be conducted and whether his right to free speech would be infringed on being extradited.

His appeal is expected to be heard sometime next year as he continues his fight against being extradited after the UK government had signed off on the order in June 2022.

Iranian President Raisi killed in helicopter crash

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian besides other officials, lost their lives in a helicopter crash on Monday.

President Raisi was a hardline cleric close to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to a report by ‘Tehran Times’, the incident occurred when they were going to the provincial capital city of Tabriz. A helicopter carrying Raisi made a “tough landing” during a visit to the country’s northwest, the national TV reported.

The incident occurred due to dense fog in the region, the TV said adding that the helicopter crashed near a copper mine called Sungun.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, governor of East Azarbaijan Province Malek Rahmati, and Friday prayer leader of Tabriz Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem were also aboard the copter. “The funeral ceremonies for the president and his companions will take place on Tuesday at 9:30 am local time (06:00 GMT) in Tabriz,” the official IRNA news agency said, adding that Raisi’s body will later be taken to Tehran.

China breathes fire as Taiwan’s new President Lai asserts sovereignty

China on Monday denounced Taiwan’s new President Lai Ching-te for his assertion that the self-ruled island is sovereign and vowed to uphold the status quo.

Lai, 64, also known as William Lai, who succeeded his independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) colleague Tsai Ing-wen after winning the popular vote in the January Presidential election this year, was sworn in as the president at a ceremony held in Taipei on Monday. China views Taiwan as a rebel province that must be reunified with the mainland, even by force.

Lai's DPP party does not seek independence from China but maintains that Taiwan is already a sovereign nation.

In his no-holds-barred inaugural speech, Lai called on China to stop threatening the island, promised to uphold the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, and called on Beijing to work jointly for peace. Lai urged Beijing to replace confrontation with dialogue and avowed that Taiwan would never back down in the face of intimidation from China, the Hong Kong-based 'South China Morning Post' reported.

Much on the expected lines, China hit back with its Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin countering Lai by saying: "Taiwan independence is a dead end".

“Regardless of the pretext or the banner under which it is pursued, the push for Taiwan independence is destined to fail,” Wang told a media briefing. A Chinese mainland spokesperson said Lai had sent “a dangerous signal” of seeking “Taiwan independence” and making provocations to undermine cross-Strait peace and stability in his speech upon assuming the role of Taiwan region's new leader.

UK court to rule on Julian Assange's extradition to the US

A British court is expected to deliver a final decision on Monday regarding the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States, concluding 13 years of legal battles and detentions.

Two judges at the High Court in London will determine if they are convinced by U.S. assurances that Assange, 52, will not face the death penalty and will be protected by the First Amendment right to free speech if tried for espionage in the US. Assange's legal team indicates that he could be extradited within 24 hours of the decision, released from jail, or entangled in further legal proceedings. "I have the sense that anything could happen at this stage," his wife Stella remarked last week.

"Julian could be extradited, or he could be freed." She added that her husband hopes to be present in court for the pivotal hearing.

No signs of the survivors on Iran helicopter crash site: Iranian Red Crescent

Hopes are fading that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his foreign minister have survived a helicopter crash in mountainous terrain and icy weather in the north of the country, an Iranian official said today after search teams located the wreckage.

“We can see the wreckage and the situation does not look good,” the head of Iran’s Red Crescent, Pirhossein Kolivand, told state TV. According to Al Jazeera, the Iranian Red Crescent says that the entire cabin of the helicopter is significantly damaged and burned. And they say that as of now, there are no signs of the survivors on the site.

After nearly 12 hours of searching, state TV reported early this morning that a Turkish drone appeared to have detected “the coordinates of the accident” because it identified “a source of heat” and informed Iranian rescue teams.

Helicopter carrying Iran's President Raisi crashes in mountainous region; search still on

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the country’s foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and other officials apparently crashed in the mountainous northwest parts of Iran on Sunday.

As of this morning, Raisi and the others on board remained missing more than 12 hours after the reported crash. Associated Press pointed out that Turkish drone footage suggested the helicopter went down in the mountains. Adverse weather conditions, including heavy fog, are hampering rescue efforts.  After hours of the rescue operation, the Turkish drone has also picked up a heat source but rescuers are yet to have reached the crash site.

The crash comes at a crucial time in the Middle East, with war raging in Gaza and weeks after Iran launched a drone-and-missile attack on Israel in response to a deadly strike on its diplomatic compound in Damascus.

Trade ties with India suspended due to ‘heavy duties’: Pakistan Foreign Minister

Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated that trade ties between Islamabad and New Delhi have been suspended since 2019 due to India imposing heavy duties on imports from Pakistan after the Pulwama attack.

In a written reply submitted to the National Assembly on Saturday, Dar, who also holds the deputy prime minister's slot, said: “India decided to impose 200 per cent duty on imports from Pakistan, suspended the Kashmir bus service and trade across the Line of Control after the Pulwama attack.” Dar was responding to a question by Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Sharmila Faruqui about trade challenges faced by Pakistan in its relations with neighbouring countries, especially India.

“We have consistently advocated constructive engagement and result-oriented dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues, including the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir with India...,” Dar said on Saturday.

The foreign minister said that the “onus is now on Delhi to take steps for the creation of an environment that is conducive to peace and dialogue”.

ED alleges over Rs 7 crore foreign funding to AAP

The Enforcement Directorate has written to the Union Home Ministry alleging the Aam Aadmi Party has received over Rs 7 crore foreign funds in contravention of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, official sources said Monday.

The federal probe agency sent the communication after it recovered some documents and emails during a drugs-linked money laundering probe against former Punjab AAP MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira and some others. The probe was launched in 2021 and Khaira was arrested by the ED that year. He is now with the Congress party.

Official sources said the ED had sent a detailed communication to the Union Home Ministry in August last year, underlining the alleged violations by the AAP and categorising these instances as contravention of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) and The Representation of the People Act.

It is understood that the ED recently shared some fresh inputs in this case with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Sources said the ED found the AAP received overseas donations of about Rs 7.08 crore till now and they allegedly “mis-declared and manipulated” the identities and nationalities of the foreign donors apart from some other details.

The agency has also informed the MHA about the verified names of the donors, their nationalities, passport numbers, amount donated, mode of donation and bank account number of the receiver, billing name, address, phone numbers, email, time and the date of donation and payment gateway used, the sources said. Some fundraising events held by the AAP through its overseas wing volunteers in the USA and Canada between 2015 and 2016 are reported to have been made in alleged violation of the FCRA, the agency told the ministry.

Alleging violations in a particular instance, the ED also informed the MHA that the names of some Canada-based people and their nationalities had been "concealed" in the party's financial records to "hide" the foreign donations being made to the party into its Indian bank account. A senior official said cases of FCRA violations are probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the home ministry can write to it seeking an investigation into these charges made by the ED.

ED seeks judicial custody for Kejriwal after he surrenders on June 2

The ED on Monday sought an extension of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's judicial custody after he surrendered on June 2 in an excise policy-linked money-laundering case.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) moved the application before Special Judge for ED and CBI Kaveri Baweja, seeking 14-day judicial custody for Kejriwal when he surrenders on June 2, claiming that the period of judicial custody granted earlier ends on Monday. Kejriwal is out on interim bail till June 1 following an order of the Supreme Court, which has directed him to surrender on June 2.

The ED, meanwhile, told the court that there is sufficient evidence against Kejriwal and co-accused, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha, to put them on trial in the case.

The Central probe agency made submission in support of its supplementary charge sheets filed against both the politicians. The judge will continue hearing the ED's arguments on the point of taking cognisance of the charge sheets on Tuesday.

The judge, meanwhile, also extended till June 2 Kavitha’s judicial custody in the money-laundering and corruption cases, lodged by the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation respectively, in connection with the scam.

Trigger warning: Mention of sexual harassment Fresh sexual harassment allegation against West Bengal governor: The Quint

Trigger warning: Mention of sexual harassment
The Quint has found details of a report filed by the Kolkata Police to the West Bengal government pertaining to a complaint filed in October last year by an Odissi danseuse from the state who accused West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose of sexually harassing her at a hotel in Delhi in January 2023.

"He went in his private car, without his security, to meet her at a hotel. She alleged that he sexually assaulted her [at the hotel]," a Kolkata Police official told The Quint on the condition of anonymity after a second case of sexual harassment surfaced against Bose last week. This comes just weeks after a contractual staffer at the Raj Bhavan also accused Bose of sexual harassment.

The police official told The Quint that the danseuse alleged Bose harassed her under the pretext of helping her sort out a “personal problem” regarding a visa-related issue by promising to introduce her to a Ministry of External Affairs official in Delhi.

BHU study on Covaxin side effects poorly designed, erroneously acknowledges ICMR: Dr Bahl

Indian Council of Medical Research Director General Dr Rajiv Bahl on Monday criticised a recently published study on the long-term safety analysis of Covaxin in adults and adolescents for its poor methodology and design.

Dr Bahl said the study had no control arm of unvaccinated individuals for comparing the rates of events between the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups. Hence, the reported events in the study cannot be linked or attributed to Covid-19 vaccination.

The ICMR is not associated with the study and has not provided any financial or technical support for the research, Dr Bahl said. The ICMR DG has written a letter to the authors of the paper and the Editor of the journal to immediately remove the acknowledgement to ICMR and publish an erratum.

A research paper, titled ‘Long-Term Safety Analysis of the BBVl52 Coronavirus Vaccine in Adolescents and Adults: Findings from a l-Year Prospective Study in North India’ stated that nearly one-third of the 926 participants in the study who received Bharat Biotech’s anti-Covid vaccine Covaxin reported ‘adverse events of special interest’, or AESI. Dr Bahl said that ICMR was acknowledged for research support without any prior approval or intimation to ICMR, which is inappropriate and unacceptable. He stated that ICMR cannot be associated with this poorly designed study which purports to present a “safety analysis” of Covaxin due to several critical flaws.

He said the study does not even provide background rates of observed events in the population, making it impossible to assess the change in incidence of observed events in the post-vaccination period. Baseline information of study participants is missing.

The study tool used is inconsistent with ‘Adverse Events of Special Interest (AESI)’ as defined in the reference provided in the paper for AESI. The method of data collection has a high risk of bias, he said. Study participants were contacted telephonically one year after vaccination and their responses were recorded without any confirmation with clinical records or by physician examination, he pointed out.

Dr Bahl also noted that similar acknowledgements to ICMR have been made in previous papers without permission, raising concerns about the authors' practices.

"The authors have been urged to immediately rectify the acknowledgment to ICMR and publish an erratum. Additionally, they are asked to address the methodological concerns raised. Failure to do so may prompt ICMR to consider legal and administrative action," he said. The Editor has been asked to retract the paper which implicitly makes conclusions on vaccine safety which are not supported by evidence.

The study, conducted by researchers from the Banaras Hindu University from January 2022 to August 2023, stated that nearly 50% of 926 study participants in the study complained of infections during the follow-up period, predominated by viral upper respiratory tract infections.

Manipur: Army brings down heavy fire on suspected insurgents; rescues 75 women

The Indian army’s Assam Rifles engaged in a fierce gunfight with suspected insurgents and rescued 75 women of a social and cultural institution in Manipur, according to a statement by the military on Sunday.

The incident reportedly occurred on May 16 when a group of people with arms began firing towards Uyok, which is at the foothills at around 10:45 pm.  The Assam Rifles in its social media post said soldiers "brought down heavy fire" on the unknown armed people, during which they also evacuated 75 Meira Paibis, a women-only social and cultural institution of the Meitei community.

The hill-dominant Kuki-Zo tribes have set up bunkers on most of the hills surrounding Manipur's valley areas, where the Meiteis live. The Meiteis have accused the Kuki-Zo tribes of shooting at anyone including farmers without provocation, while the Kuki-Zo tribes have accused the Meiteis of trying to take over hill areas with frequent attacks.

Did not broadcast private conversation involving Rohit Sharma: Star Sports

IPL broadcaster Star Sports on Monday denied airing the audio of any personal conversation involving Rohit Sharma after the Indian captain accused the channel of “breaching” his privacy despite his requests to stop the recording.

A video shared by Kolkata Knight Riders, involving Rohit and KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, in which the former was purportedly seen contemplating his future at the Mumbai Indians, surfaced online on May 11.

KKR subsequently deleted the video from its social media pages. On May 16, Rohit was seen having a chat with Dhawal Kulkarni ahead of MI's fixture against Lucknow Super Giants.

The opener requested the broadcaster to turn off the audio when he noticed that the cameras were once again directed towards him.

On Sunday, he accused the channel of airing a private conversation but Star denied the charge in a statement. “The clip, taken during a training session on May 16 at Wankhede stadium, for which Star Sports had authorised access, momentarily showed the senior player in conversation with his friends on the sidelines. No audio from this conversation was either recorded or broadcast.

“The clip, which only showed the senior player requesting for the audio of his conversation to not be recorded, got featured in Star Sports’ live coverage of pre-match preparations and lacked editorial relevance beyond this,” the channel stated. Rohit had called for restrain while recording on-field moments.

“The need to get exclusive content and focused only on views and engagement will one day break the trust between the fans, cricketers and cricket. Let better sense prevail,” Rohit said on Sunday.

The channel said it was committed to protecting players’ privacy.

Focus on Sindhu as she looks to end title drought at Malaysia Masters

Back from a break, P V Sindhu will look to hit the right notes in her quest for some confidence-boosting wins ahead of the Paris Olympics when she spearheads India's campaign in the Malaysia Masters badminton tournament starting in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

Sindhu, a former world champion, returns to the international circuit after skipping the Uber Cup and Thailand Open.

She will aim to go deep in the women's singles draw of the BWF World Tour Super 500 event. The 28-year-old from Hyderabad hasn't been able to hit top form after recovering from a knee injury sustained in October last year.

A silver and bronze-winner at the Olympics, Sindhu's return hasn't been smooth and she has endured a series of narrow losses.

Sindhu has just two quarterfinal finishes to show in her six competitive appearances so far.

The last title win for her came in the 2022 Singapore Open though she did come close to claiming the Spain Masters last year when she reached the finals in Madrid.

Salt-less KKR take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in power-hitting slugfest

Long Read

High-flying Kolkata Knight Riders and an unpredictable Sunrisers Hyderabad, teams that have built their IPL 2024 campaign on power-hitting, will look to outmuscle each other in Qualifier 1 in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

If KKR were the first team to make IPL playoffs this year, SRH gave themselves a huge boost by inflicting a four-wicket loss on Punjab Kings on Sunday to eventually finish second with 17 points, ahead of Rajasthan Royals.

While the two top teams from the 70-match league round have enjoyed some time off courtesy of incessant rains during their respective clashes over last 10 days, the lack of turnaround time to compete in a high-intensity playoff game will also pose a unique challenge. KKR and SRH will get only a day’s time to traverse thousands of kilometres and get to Ahemdabad for the first half of the playoffs as they both featured on the final day of the league round on Sunday.

SRH would feel they have hit their strides following a comprehensive win over PBKS and having also got recent game-time, which isn’t the case for KKR whose last complete game was on May 11.

Shreyas Iyer’s KKR had won four games on the trot before rains washed away their last two league games and the two-time winners. Table-toppers KKR (19 points) will also have to fill in the huge void at the top with their second-highest run-scorer and wicketkeeper Phil Salt (435 runs) leaving the camp for national duties with England ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Salt had forged a devastating partnership with Sunil Narine (461) at the top and KKR were immensely benefited by their ultra-aggressive approach with the bat, backed up well by a potent middle-order even though skipper Iyer (287) has not had a major impact yet.

The washed out contest against RR in particular robbed KKR of an opportunity to give expected replacement Rahmanullah Gurbaz a go at the top with Narine, something that would have settled a few concerns certainly. For KKR, the form of Nitish Rana adds more solidity to the middle-order while a fiery Andre Russell among the finishers promise them vital runs.

In many ways, SRH match KKR’s firepower on paper and that is what adds more to the lure of this contest.

Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma have both got their runs at a strike rate exceeding 200 while inspiring their side to rewrite a few records. Australian southpaw Head has in many ways redefined aggressiveness with the bat while also remaining successful (533 runs with one century and four fifties).

His fearlessness has also brought the best out of the young Indian batter Abhishek (467), who has clobbered an overall 41 sixes this IPL — 10 more than his overall tally of 31 in the previous six seasons.

SRH have also managed to find answers to a couple of questions which were lingering on for a while. At No 3, the 2016 winners have found a dependable option in Rahul Tripathi who can both accelerate as well as weather storms when bowlers are on-song. Additionally, Heinrich Klaasen has rediscovered his form after a dip in the middle of the tournament. With a crucial knock of 42 against PBKS, Klaasen has signalled having found his mojo back, which only makes SRH even more formidable.

At Ahmedabad, as seen in the World Cup final last year, teams batting second have had more success, winning four out of six completed games while only twice the team which batted first could defend successfully.

Also, against the style of play for both these teams — to bury oppositions under mountains of runs — this venue has had only two scores of 200 or above in 12 innings, which means the bowlers will also have their say. If KKR have a battery of spinners to back their fast bowlers led by Mitchell Starc, SRH’s pace bowling attack led by skipper Pat Cummins has time and again produced unified efforts to make their mark.

In their only meet earlier this season back in late March, KKR had pipped SRH by four runs in a high-scoring game.

The match starts at 7:30 pm IST.

Australia likely to name McGurk, Short as travelling reserves for T20 World Cup: Report

The big-hitting Jake Fraser McGurk and Matthew Short are likely to be Australia's travelling reserves for the T20 World Cup which begins on June 1 in the Americas.

The 22-year-old McGurk has been in blazing form for Delhi Capitals in the IPL.

But the top-order batter, who is yet to make his T20I debut, missed out on the 15-member provisional squad because Australia already have an established top three in David Warner, Travis Head and captain Mitchell Marsh. Batting all-rounder Short, on the other hand, played nine of Australia's last 14 T20Is, opening in five of them and he was also the Big Bash League player of the tournament in back-to-back seasons.

The Australian World Cup squad will fly to the Caribbean on Thursday for a training camp in Trinidad that will include two practice matches against Namibia and West Indies on May 28 and 30 respectively.

IPL: Rajasthan Royals finish third after rain plays spoilsport in their game against KKR

Rajasthan Royals paid the price for their shoddy show during the business end as a washout of their final IPL league game against table toppers Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday pushed them to third place behind Sunrisers Hyderabad.

While KKR finished the league engagements on 20 points with nine wins and two more solitary points courtesy wash-outs, SRH (17 points) pipped RR (17 points) by virtue of better Net Run Rate (NRR). SRH finished with NRR of 0.414 compared to RR's 0.273. KKR will play Sunrisers Hyderabad in the first Qualifier in Ahmedabad on Tuesday followed by the 'Eliminator' between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the same venue.

Rajasthan Royals would blame themselves for getting into a nice little rut after an incredible run during the first half of the tournament when they had won eight out of their nine games. But their campaign lost a bit of steam towards the back end as they lost four games on trot and with no Jos Buttler for crunch games, facing a marauding RCB in a winner-takes-all match could be a very tough proposition.

On the other hand, SRH, a team that redefined power-hitting with optimum use of 'Impact Sub', had one of their best chases on Sunday, albeit on a track that once again resembled a highway in terms of its placid quotient. The chase of 215 against a depleted Punjab Kings with five balls to spare also bolstered their NRR just when it was needed.
